Science in the Swamp

To celebrate National Science Week 2013, Centennial Park put on a free event for kids today called Science in the Swamp. I had seen it advertised on facebook during the week and thought my dinosaur obsessed little man would love to go along and I just love a good free kids activity to fill in a few hours.
We took advantage of the beautiful Sydney weather and parked a fair bit away so we could enjoy a walk through the park. Its a truly scenic park and you forget how close to the city you actually are. I love watching the people go about their business, even when their business is to sit in the sun with a good book.

The event itself, when we found it, was pretty relaxing. Spaced out over a good (but manageable) distance were things to do and see. Leo got to pat carp, see the little critters that live in the ponds, look at frogs and snakes and stick insects and then go looking for fruit bats in the trees.

The main attraction was the amazing Erth Dinosaur Petting Zoo. Walking along was a very realistic Australovenator, that even Jason and I forgot wasn't real. Leo- with all of his dinosaur obsession, did get a little scared of it. He told me later he liked the dinosaur... from a distance.

On our way back to the car we stopped at the Banksia Buddies exhibition and Leo got to make his own Terrarium which is now hanging in his window being watched a little too closer for any signs of seed shoots.

This event really was a lot of fun to do with Leo. I loved finding bats with him and watching his face as he saw the dinosaur for the first time. The best bit - one boisterous 3 year old out for the count on the drive home!
